Chapter Twenty-Three

It was five in the afternoon by the time Miranda got back home. She’d stopped at Coco’s, but no one was home, so on impulse she’d gone over to see Fanuzzi.

She’d never had a friend like Joan Fanuzzi. Miranda knew she would listen, sympathize. The woman was the only person beside Parker and Estavez who knew the sordid details of her past and about her search for her daughter. So far. But for some reason Miranda couldn’t bring herself to go in. She just couldn’t go through the details again.

She drove around the block three times and finally gave up and went home.

She found Parker in the large upstairs office, with its massive computer monitors, doing research. He turned as she entered the room and she saw nothing in his handsome face but compassion.

“How did your visit with Mackenzie go?” He knew her so well.

Her shoulders slumped and she felt her eyes fill with tears again as she answered. “Not as well as I expected.”

“Oh, my darling.” He rose and drew her into his strong arms, held her against his muscular chest.

Miranda closed her eyes against the heaving sobs she couldn’t hold back. It felt so good here, so comforting in his embrace. She wished she could stay here forever. “I should have listened to you.”

He stroked her hair. “You did what you thought was best.”

That felt good to hear. A few months ago he would have been angry with her for going off on her own. “Mackenzie really hates me now. She didn’t listen to a word I said when I told her about Leon. She thought I was making it up because of Wendy.” She took the handkerchief he held out to her.

“Give her some time to take in the news. She’s upset. The whole family is upset.”

She pulled away and looked into his eyes. So he hadn’t read her mind just now. “How did you know I’d gone there?”

“I know you. And,” he breathed out a sigh. “I got a call from Oliver Chatham. They aren’t happy at all.”

She put her head in her hands and sank into one of the desk chairs. “Guess you told me so.”

“Actually, I’ve been thinking you were right. It is best they know Groth could be after Mackenzie, no matter how disturbing and painful it is.”

She looked up at him again and realized he had something to say to her. “Why?”

His jaw clenched. “I also just got another call from Hosea.”

“And?”

“The police found the Lexus Groth purchased on the side of the road near the Interstate in Five Points.”

“Five Points? That’s back near the hospital. Not anywhere near where we looked for him last night.”

“No, it isn’t. But that doesn’t mean he’s not in Druid Hills.”

“Doesn’t mean he is, either.” That bastard could be anywhere. Anywhere in the six hundred or so square miles of the metropolitan area. “He’s zigzagging around, trying to throw us off.”

“Yes,” Parker said grimly.

She shot up, palms pressed to her temples and paced the room. “I saw an SUV this morning when I left the subdivision.
